Harmony Across Eras: Treasures from the Collection of the First Ambassador of Finland to China

2024-06-18

The "Harmony Across Eras: Treasures from the Collection of the First Ambassador of Finland to China" recently opened at the Guardian Art Center, showcasing the personal collection of Cay Sundström, Finland's first ambassador to China. This exhibition integrates Finnish natural landscapes in an artistic form, offering visitors an in-depth understanding of Chinese and Finnish cultures and the beauty of art.

During Cay Sundström’s tenure in Beijing from 1953 to 1959, he amassed a significant collection of Chinese ancient art masterpieces. After his death, these artworks remained at the Finnish Embassy in China. The exhibition features over a hundred exquisite pieces from his collection, including porcelain and Chinese-style furniture. It also displays iconic Finnish design products and artistic light installations by Finnish artist Teemu Määttänen.

In 1950, Finland established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, becoming one of the earliest Western countries to do so. Ambassador Sundström was the first to reside at the Guanghua Road 30 residence. The Finnish furniture in the residence, combined with Sundström's collection of Chinese artworks, created a harmonious blend. This exhibition marks the first public display of the art treasures collected by Finland's first ambassador to China, alongside Finnish design classics and artistic works.

The exhibition is free to the public and will run until June 27.
