Overview

Shadow puppetry is an ancient traditional folk art in China, called "donkey skin shadows" by old Beijing residents. Over time, two major schools emerged - the Eastern and Western districts. For hundreds of years, this ancient art has brought joy to generations of ancestors. According to historical records, shadow puppetry originated in the Warring States period, flourished in the Han Dynasty, reached its peak in the Song Dynasty, and spread to West Asia and Europe during the Yuan Dynasty - a long and winding history.

Inheritance and Protection

In November 2019, the "List of Protection Units for Representative Projects of National Intangible Cultural Heritage" was announced, granting the Beijing Shadow Puppet Troupe the status of protection unit for "Beijing Shadow Puppetry."

Value

Shadow puppets are not only for watching and appreciation, but also for people to play with themselves. They can be placed in windows or against white walls as interior art decorations. With their simple and elegant styling imbued with a strong folk flavor, shadow puppets possess both artistic appreciation and collection value.

Styling

The designs emphasize capturing the emotions and expressions of characters, focusing on unified styling at the joints and reasonable clothing and headgear depictions. Liu Jingda creatively integrated Peking Opera facial patterns into shadow puppet designs, resulting in elegant styling and vibrant colors.

Vocal Style

The vocal style absorbs voices and melodies from local Beijing operas like Kunqu, Peking Opera, and quyi (traditional arts). A single singing segment deftly blends multiple vocal styles and tunes, forming the unique vocal art characteristics of Beijing shadow puppetry.
