Ancient towns in Beijing | Wanping City

2024-02-29

Wanping City is the only well-preserved defense city with two gates in North China. To defend the capital, the Ming Dynasty ordered Wu Jun, a court official, to preside over the construction of the city.

The city has two gates, the east gate and the west gate. It is 640 meters long from east to west and 320 meters wide from north to south. The total area of the city is about 20 hectares.

In Wanping City, except for the bullet holes shelled by Japanese invaders, other buildings have been repaired and rebuilt. In 1961, the State Council listed Wanping City as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In 1984, China allocated special funds to repair the city walls and east and west towers. It was opened to tourists in 1987. At the end of the 20th century, the People's Government of Beijing Municipality decided to restore the original appearance of Wanping City in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including restoring asphalt roads to stone floors.

Wanping City makes full use of the historical and cultural resources within its jurisdiction, fully protects the city's history, and utilizes the city's culture. The Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression has been built in Wanping City. Wanping Lake, Xiaoyue Lake, and Lvdi Park have improved the living conditions of residents. Wanping City has become a sightseeing and tourist resort in southwest Beijing integrating history, culture, art, and patriotism education.
