'Teahouse' opens again in Beijing People's Art Theatre with a real-name system

2024-02-23

On the evening of February 22, in the Capital Theater, the "treasure” of Beijing People's Art Theater, "Teahouse" returned to pay tribute to the 125th anniversary of Lau Shaw's birth.

The “Teahouse” premiered at the Capital Theater in 1958, and since then, the work has been performed on the stage of Beijing People's Art Theater(BPAT) for more than 60 years. In three acts, "Teahouse" spans nearly half a century, reflecting the changes of the times with the fate and sorrows of many minor characters. So far, "Teahouse" has been performed more than 700 times, which is based on Lau Shaw's text. And two generations of "Teahouse" directors and performers put it on the stage. Every round of the stage, "Teahouse" will set off a hard-to-find spectator heat, which will show the powerful vitality of the "classics" that will remain new for a long time.

Nowadays, with the story taking place in the distant past, it is more and more difficult to perform the original flavor of "Teahouse" and the old Beijing city.

At the same time, BPAT, which has entered a new transition stage between the old and the new, is faced with the heavy responsibility of continuing to interpret the classics. This year, young actors are joining the “Teahouse” to run the show, hoping to give them a taste of the atmosphere of this theater group and to do something to pave the way for the future legacy.

In addition, it is worth mentioning, that this round of performances uses real-name ticketing and real-name admission. So, before the show, there are little scalpers outside the gates of the Capital Theater, and the order is significantly improved over the previous.

This year, "Teahouse" will also meet with more audiences. October to November, "Teahouse", "Mutiny", "Sunrise", "Du Fu", and "Beneath the Red Banner" will participate in the Shanghai International Arts Festival, to open BPAT’s other large-scale performances and exchanges after a 10-year gap.
