Birdwatching Parks in Downtown Beijing | Olympic Forest Park

2024-01-17

Discover the winter "cuties" in Beijing's Olympic Forest Park, Nanhaizi Park, and Chaoyang Park. These parks provide habitats for various bird species and are ideal destinations for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. From the adorable North Long-tailed Tit to the graceful black swans, these parks offer opportunities to get up close with nature and experience the wonders of biodiversity.

Olympic Forest Park

Olympic Forest Park is divided into two parts: the south park and the north park. The south park covers approximately 380 hectares, featuring magnificent landscapes such as Yangshan. The north park spans around 300 hectares, highlighting small charming flower fields and other small landscapes. The lakes in the park retain extensive wetland mudflats and dense reed beds, creating a paradise for various water birds. The extensive mixed forest management provides concealed habitats and abundant food sources for numerous forest birds. This park is not only a paradise for birds but also a haven for nature enthusiasts.

At the lakeside of Olympic Forest Park, the silhouette of the heron is often spotted. Herons are not hard to find, partly because of their large size, and partly due to their outstanding demeanor.

This winter, the attention of internet users has been drawn to the influx of the highly popular North Long-tailed Tit in Beijing. Recently, some birdwatching enthusiasts successfully "chased the stars" in the park. The North Long-tailed Tit has a petite figure, with its head covered in fluffy white feathers, shiny black eyes, and a short, thick beak. When they curl up, they look like adorable "sticky rice balls." Therefore, many birdwatchers affectionately refer to them as "Little Fat Chirps" or "Flying Rice Dumplings." These cute little birds have become the focus of people's attention.
