Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Snow Carnival to open on January 15th

2024-01-11

The 38th Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Snow Carnival will kick off on January 15th. This year's featured ice sculptures are triple the amount of previous years, along with the debut of the glacier canyon park and an exciting drone flying performance.

the Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Snow Carnival, renowned in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, has successfully held 37 sessions since its inception in 1987, becoming a traditional winter tourism attraction in the capital city of Beijing. In 2024, marking the traditional Chinese Year of the Dragon, the Longqing Gorge will celebrate under the theme of 'Celebrating the Year of Dragon.' The enchanting world of ice and snow, featuring premium ice and snow sculptures, along with their rich cultural significance, aims to captivate both new and returning visitors.

Ice Lantern Snow Carnival features a total of 200 ice sculptures in this year, providing visitors with a profound experience of the exquisite artistry behind these masterpieces. Traditional ice sculptures incorporate polar, marine, and other thematic elements, showcasing the splendid beauty of the underwater world and intertwining with the legendary themes of Dragon Kings and the Longqing Gorge. Various anime-inspired ice sculptures will also make an appearance, blending gaming characters and scenes with the scenic landscapes of the Longqing Gorge. The combination of high-tech and well-designed colorful lights will create a fairy-tale world that feels both dreamlike and enchanting.

There are also over 100 snow sculptures, with the must-see highlight for visitors being the 100-meter snow sculpture titled 'Dragon King Bringing Rain.' According to the introduction,  praying for abundant rain is the cultural significance rooted in China's ancient water-worshipping traditions. Therefore, the 100-meter snow sculpture depicts the entire process of the Dragon King bringing rainfall, symbolizing hopes for auspicious weather and abundant harvest in the Year of the Dragon.

Moreover, 50 sets of festive lanterns, 2000 tree lights, and tens of thousands of lights outlining the mountainous Great Wall and towers, along with decorative illuminations, will enchant the Longqing Gorge, turning it into a fantastical and dazzling display.

In addition, at this year's Ice Lantern Snow Carnival, the Longqing Gorge introduces the brand-new Glacier Canyon Park, allowing visitors in the outskirts of Beijing to experience the wild beauty reminiscent of Lake Baikal. Guided by professional drivers, guests can partake in thrilling activities such as ice drifting and high-speed leaps on the frozen surface, providing both excitement and adrenaline rushes.

The park strategically places numerous scenic spots, featuring Cosplay parades with characters like the Dragon King of East Sea, the God of Wealth, and anime figures, creating perfect opportunities for visitors to capture memorable photos. The Cultural Square will showcase captivating intangible cultural heritage performances and variety shows.

In addition, the park will unveil a drone light show, featuring 1000 drones forming the spectacular display of 'Flying Dragons in the Sky,' immersing visitors in a breathtaking experience resembling a journey through the vast celestial expanse.
