Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park phase 1 to be completed this year

2024-01-10

This year, Fangshan District will complete Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park phase 1 and promote the completion of the new museum, archaeological experience hall, and archaeological workstation.

Liulihe Site, located in Dongjialin Village, Liulihe Town, Fangshan District, is not only the site of the capital of the Yan State, a vassal state in the Western Zhou dynasty in about 1045 BC, but also the earliest source of Beijing's civilization that can be traced. It is known as the "source of Beijing." According to the archaeological results at present, the Liulihe Site is 3.5 kilometers long from east to west and 1.5 kilometers wide from north to south. It covers an area of 5.25 square kilometers.

In 1988, the Liulihe Site was announced by the State Council as the third batch of "major historical and cultural sites protected at the national level." In 2021, Liulihe Site was listed in the "Top 100 Archaeological Discoveries in a Century" in China. On December 29, 2022, the National Cultural Heritage Administration officially announced the list of the fourth batch of national archaeological site parks and the list of projects, involving 21 provinces and their 51 archaeological site parks, among which Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park was also listed.

To speed up the construction of Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park, the Liulihe Site Management Office started the project of phase 1 in May 2023. By the end of July 2023, the earthwork topography and landscape planting projects had been basically completed.

However, affected by the torrential rain disaster in July 2023, some parts of the completed earthwork topography in the park collapsed, and the seeds and seedlings in the completed landscape planting project were covered with silt. At present, the relevant departments of Fangshan District have designed the restoration scheme of earthwork topography and landscape planting and optimized the park's phase 1 project scheme.

This year, Fangshan District will continue to construct the Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park phase 1, laying a solid foundation for applying for the official listing of the National Archaeological Site Park and building a typical demonstration of the third-generation national archaeological site parks. During the construction of this park, Fangshan District, together with relevant departments, will intensify archaeological research and cultural relics protection, explore the connotation value, enrich the display content, innovate the management and operation mode, and promote cultural construction, urban and rural development, and ecological protection. Liulihe National Archaeological Site Park will make a positive impact on inheriting China's excellent traditional culture and building China into a country with a strong socialist culture.
