Beijing's first-ever bicycle-only lane starting from Huilongguan will be further extended. Following the successful completion of the first phase of its southward extension project last year, the second phase is now gearing up to make the lane stretch from Heqing Road all the way down to Xizhimen.
The first phase was completed at the end of 2022. Starting from Houchangcun Road on the north which connects the lane, the lane runs parallel to Subway Line 13 and ends near the North 4th Ring Road on the south, spanning a total of 8.6 kilometers. Cyclists taking the lane can depart from Houchangcun Road and then go along Shangdi East Road, Shangdi East 2nd Road, Shangdi South Road, Xinxi Road, Zhongguancun North Street, and Heqing Road to Reach the North 4th Ring Road.
The lane has a speed limit of 15 kilometers per hour, and pedestrians and electric vehicles are prohibited on it. After opening, it will take about 26 minutes to ride from Huilongguan in Changping District to Shangdi Software Park in Haidian District.
The second phase of the southward extension project aims to forge a direct path from the North 4th Ring Road to Xizhimen, starting at Heqing Road, the endpoint of the first phase. The extended lane, expected to stretch for 5.7 kilometers, will comprise the non-motorized vehicle roads in several parks, connecting Zhongguancun South 5th Street, and Dazhongsi East Road, Sidaokou Road, Jiaoda East Road, Gaoliangqiao Xiejie Street and ending at Xizhimen Outer Street.
The project will connect the non-motorized vehicle roads between Houchangcun Road and Xizhimen, and link together Zhongguancun Software Park, Qinghe Large-scale Residential Area, Tsinghua University, the "Cluster of Eight Universities" (which includes Peking University Health Science Center, Beihang University, the University of Science and Technology Beijing, China University of Geosciences, China University of Petroleum - Beijing, China University of Mining and Technology - Beijing, China Agricultural University (East Campus), and Beijing Forestry University), Wudaokou, Dazhongsi, Xizhimen, and other large business districts.
