Small joys of life in Beijing

2023-11-28

You can enjoy a pot of tea, listen to a comedy show, and laugh heartily with the performers on stage; or trim a bouquet of flowers based on your own aesthetic taste; or do handicrafts, visit exhibitions, learn about folk customs, and taste the flavor of Beijing culture... There are small joys of life in the capital city.

Lao She Teahouse

In the past, people in old Beijing loved to drink tea, so teahouses naturally sprouted up everywhere. Many teahouses may seem like just a place to drink tea, but they actually have many other functions. Among them, "socializing" is undoubtedly an important function of these teahouses. People gather in teahouses to meet friends, ask about each other's well-being, and exchange information.

The Beijing Lao She Teahouse was founded in 1988. It is located southwest of Tiananmen Square and adjacent to the ancient commercial street of Beijing, Dashilan. Its unique geographical location and deep cultural heritage of Beijing traditional culture make it a cultural gathering place for folk customs. The teahouse is named after the famous Chinese artist Lao She and his play "Teahouse". It was founded by Mr. Yin Shengxi, the first folk culture teahouse in China after the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Qianmen Big Bowl Tea in 1979. It is now a collection of Beijing-style culture, tea culture, opera culture, and food culture, integrating six traditional Beijing teahouse forms such as book teahouse, meal teahouse, clear tea teahouse, big teahouse, wild tea teahouse, and clear sound table teahouse.

Today's Lao She Teahouse still retains the business model of tea drinking and listening to comedy shows. The three-story performance hall of the Lao She Teahouse Qianmen store has good shows every day, and the "Comedy Special" teaches visitors how to appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese comedy, making it a worthwhile trip to Qianmen. The variety show "Four Seasons Beijing · Tea" is unique in Beijing. It combines the performance content with the scenes of Beijing life, covering traditional cultural contents such as Peking Opera, drum music, acrobatics, and magic. It has received more than 6 million Chinese and foreign guests from more than 80 countries on five continents, becoming a window to showcase national art and cultural treasures and a folk bridge connecting people around the world.

As a base for experiencing Beijing culture, Lao She Teahouse has the most authentic Beijing folk culture. Visitors can enjoy opera, tea, food, and performances here, immersing themselves in the Beijing culture experience.
