Zhengyang Bookstore in Wansong Laoren Pagoda Courtyard

2023-11-28

Wansong Laoren Pagoda is the tomb pagoda of the eminent monk Wansong Xingxiu in the Jin and Yuan dynasties. It is one of the few remaining relics of the Yuan Dynasty and the only remaining eaves-style brick pagoda in the old city of Beijing. As a landmark building of Beijing's ancient capital culture, it has witnessed the urban development history of Beijing for hundreds of years.

On April 23, 2014, coinciding with the 19th World Book Day, the Cultural Commission of Xicheng District and Zhengyang Bookstore jointly opened the gate of the Yuan Wansong Laoren Pagoda Courtyard, a national cultural heritage site, to the public for free as a public reading space.

Zhengyang Bookstore is currently the only specialty bookstore in Beijing that only deals with historical and cultural literature related to Beijing. Old doors, tables and chairs, window frames, door stones, city bricks, alley doorplates... everything in the courtyard of Zhengyang Bookstore makes people feel like they are back in the daily life of old Beijing.

The bookshelves in the room are densely packed with books about old Beijing. Whether interested in Beijing tourism or food, one can find a wealth of books and information here. There are also old maps hanging on the walls, each of which reveals the profound heritage of Beijing city and tells the legendary stories of the ancient capital.

Zhengyang Bookstore has become an important cultural window for readers and society, and a home for Chinese and foreign readers who love Beijing's historical culture.

Address: No. 43 Xisi South Street, Xicheng District, Beijing
