It's bird-watching season again, bring your camera to encounter the poetic winter

2023-11-22

Early winter is the season for bird migration. The snow-covered reeds and agile flying birds create an endless poetic scenery. With the warm sun, let's go on a journey with the travel writer to find these "little cuties" in winter.

01/Wild Duck Lake National Wetland Park

Wild Duck Lake Wetland Park is located in the East Asia-Australasia Flyway, where a large number of migratory birds stop, breed, and winter every year. It is an important station for bird migration.

Upon entering the park, the lakes and waterways are surrounded by dense wetland vegetation. The golden reed marshes are reflected under the blue sky and white clouds, and water birds occasionally soar. The park has bird-watching platforms and observation decks, where visitors can enjoy the scenery and observe various waterfowl and migratory birds up close.

Standing on the observation deck and looking into the distance, the towering mountains in the distance and the swaying reeds nearby immediately open up the heart. Looking far into the lake, migratory birds with their young have arrived at Wild Duck Lake. Swans leisurely swim in the water, cranes call out loudly, great bustards calmly search for food, eagles soar in the sky, and wild ducks move through the reed marshes, forming a harmonious and beautiful picture.

It is currently the season for bird migration, and thousands of migratory birds are resting and foraging here. Photography enthusiasts who love bird-watching may want to visit Wild Duck Lake to experience the beauty of harmony between humans and nature up close.

02/Olympic Forest Park

Olympic Forest Park is divided into two parks, North and South Parks. The South Park covers an area of about 380 hectares, with large-scale landscape features such as Yangshan, Olympic Sea, and artificial wetlands. The North Park covers an area of about 300 hectares, with small stream landscape features such as flower fields, Yan Tower, and Big Tree Garden. The lakes in the park retain a large number of wetland beaches and reeds, becoming a paradise for water birds to inhabit. The extensive management of mixed forests also provides a hidden place and food source for many forest birds.

Grey herons can often be seen by the lake in the park. Grey herons are not difficult to find, firstly because of their large size, and secondly because of their excellent temperament. Even in the harsh winter of Beijing, they can often be seen standing alone by the water, with the withered reeds reflecting in the water, giving off an ethereal and elegant aura.

This winter, the internet-famous "Little Fat Chirp" - the North Long-tailed Tit - has come to Beijing in large numbers. Recently, some birdwatching enthusiasts have successfully spotted them in the Aosen Park. The North Long-tailed Tit is small in size, with a white, furry head, black eyes, a short and thick beak, and a round and cute appearance when curled up like a "sticky rice ball". Therefore, many birdwatching enthusiasts affectionately call them "Little Fat Chirp" or "Flying Tangyuan".

03/Nanhaizi Park

The Nanhaizi area is located in the southwest of the Economic Development Zone. After years of ecological protection and construction, it has become one of the areas with the most abundant biodiversity in the Economic Development Zone.

Nanhaizi Park has open water, winding rivers, soft beaches, and undulating terrain. The diverse terrain and dense vegetation provide abundant food sources and good hiding places for wildlife, attracting birds to nest and rest here, and also becoming a good place for citizens to relax and watch birds.

Recently, in Nanhaizi Park and the Elk Garden, many birds have gathered on the lake and river banks to rest and feed. Winter migratory birds in Beijing, such as the Large-billed Crow, Small-billed Crow, Daurian Jackdaw, and Eurasian Tree Sparrow, have also arrived as scheduled, ready to spend the winter here, creating a beautiful natural scenery.

04/Chaoyang Park

The northern part of Chaoyang Park covers an area of 570,000 square meters, mainly focusing on natural ecology. After nearly 20 years of precipitation, it has formed a relatively stable wetland community, providing diverse habitats for various organisms.

The Wild Duck Island is adjacent to the lotus lake, consisting of two green islands and surrounding floating islands. Due to the water circulation device installed in the lake, the area around Wild Duck Island does not freeze all year round, providing a good place for water birds to play.

In April last year, two black swans flew to Wild Duck Island and settled there, jokingly referred to by netizens as the "island owner" of Wild Duck Island. Currently, the park's black swan "family" is scattered in the lotus lake and the north lake. In order to create a harmonious atmosphere for visitors and swans to coexist, and to meet the needs of visitors to listen and watch birds, since October, Chaoyang Park has actively planned to create a new attraction - Swan Home. Recently, six white swans that entered the park in October have successfully met with visitors. They get along well with other water birds, sometimes diving to search for food, sometimes walking on floating islands, and playing "hide and seek" with visitors among the reeds and aquatic plants.

In addition, the park has added landscape walkways, waterfront platforms, and waterfront trails to create a beautiful living environment where people and nature can harmoniously coexist!

05/Miyun Reservoir

Currently, it is the season for bird migration. The "advance team" of migratory birds, mainly composed of swans and bean geese, has flown to the Miyun Reservoir basin one after another. In the middle and late part of this month, the peak of bird migration will arrive.

In the evening, a group of swans stretched their elegant bodies and leisurely swam on the clear water surface of the Qingshui River upstream of the Miyun Reservoir. It is understood that the swan is a typical migratory bird, a second-level protected animal in China, and likes to live in lakes, reservoirs, and ponds with many reeds. Their choice of living environment is extremely harsh. The wide water area and rich plants of the Qingshui River provide a good natural environment for swans to inhabit, winter, survive and reproduce. During the "swan season", more than 50 swans often settle on the Qingshui River, and the number of other wild birds such as wild ducks, mandarin ducks, and wild geese is also increasing year by year.

These creatures that inhabit and reproduce in the reservoir basin not only add infinite vitality and vitality to early winter but also attract countless birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts to come to the Qingshui River to watch.
