The Grand View Garden is located on Nancaiyuan West Street in Xicheng District. It was built in 1984 and covers an area of 130,000 square meters. Chosen as the filming location for the TV drama "Dream of the Red Chamber," it was constructed based on the original novel and the research of several experts in Redology. It has now become a comprehensive tourist area that primarily offers film and television shooting services, as well as sightseeing, cultural entertainment, and leisure vacations. Popular TV dramas filmed in the Beijing Grand View Garden include "Dream of the Red Chamber," "My Fair Princess," "Empresses in the Palace," and "Wrong Carriage, Right Groom."
With more than 40 pavilions, towers, temples, and courtyards adorned with beautiful flowers and famous trees, the garden features winding paths that create a fairyland-like atmosphere. Recently, it has become a popular spot for young people to have a visit and take photos due to the hit drama "Empresses in the Palace."
Xingqin Archway
The Xingqin Archway of the Grand View Garden is located on the north bank of the Qinfang Pond. It was built by the water and has a boat docking platform. The four-pillar, three-bay archway is made of Fangshan Qingbai stone, and the traditional characters "Xingqin Villa" shine brightly on the top, with the words "Fang'an" and "Yujin" engraved on the left and right sides, respectively. The archway is 8 meters high and 11 meters wide, exuding a dignified and extraordinary atmosphere. It is the most representative architectural feature of the Grand View Garden.
Archways are commemorative buildings commonly seen in classical Chinese architecture. The Xinggqin Archway in the Grand View Garden not only showcases the luxurious and solemn atmosphere of the Xingqin Villa but also implies that the garden itself is like a "fantasyland" on earth.
In the drama, this location is set as Qionghua Island, where Consort Hua, after losing favor, desires to ascend.
Guen Siyi Hall
Guen Siyi Hall is located behind the Xingqin Archway and serves as the central part of Xingqin Villa. It consists of a main hall and side halls on the east and west. Behind Guen Siyi Hall are the Daguanlou Pavilion, Zhuijin Pavilion, and Hanfang Pavilion. The majestic halls and towering buildings feature green pine trees, Buddhist eaves, jade railings, golden animal face patterns, and colorful dragon heads. Among the buildings in the Grand View Garden, this group of halls is the most magnificent and exquisitely decorated.
In Episode 13 of the drama, this location is set as the Qinzheng Hall OF the Old Summer Palace, where the Fourth Prince first encounters Zhen Huan.
Zhuijin Tower
In the eastern part of the Grand View Garden, there is a courtyard with water on the west side and a mountain on the east side, which is the location of Zhuijin Tower. In the Episode 14 of the drama An Lingrong's father, An Bihuai, is imprisoned, and An Lingrong seeks help from Zhen Huan and Shen Meizhuang here.
As one of the few two-story buildings in the Grand View Garden, Zhuijin Tower offers a distant view of the splendid scenery of Zilingzhou and a view across the water to Ouxiang Pavilion. The shore is adorned with blooming flowers, and the pond contains lush water chestnuts and fragrant lotus. Among the ten-feet-tall reeds, mandarin ducks play in the water, and the wind sways the lotus petals.
Enjoying the lotus and playing with carp in the shade of the willows on Zilingzhou, and having a tea and heart-to-heart conversation in the rooms of Zhuixun Tower, brings great joy.
Hengwu Garden
Hengwu Garden is located in the northeast corner of the Grand View Garden. It is a square and orderly courtyard with seamless walls made of polished stones. In the drama, this is where the Fourth Prince first appears and is rejected when seeking an audience with the Emperor and Empress.
A meandering stream passes through the garden, winding south and then east, forming a small lake outside the south gate of Hengwu Garden. On the lake, there is a well-arranged curved bridge, and across the lake is a mountain peak called "Huaxu" made of Taihu stones.
Hengwu Garden stands out in the Grand View Garden with its solid and robust architectural materials and a style characterized by thickness and solemnity. Its clean and simple design sets it apart in the Grand View Garden, where delicate and unique features prevail.
Qu jing tong you chu (A secluded quiet place which the winding path leads to)
The entrance of the Grand View Garden features a Taihu stone artificial mountain, placed at the garden gate. It acts as a lush screen, guiding visitors to follow the winding paths and pass through the caves, allowing them to appreciate the various scenes within the garden. This is precisely the "winding path leading to a secluded quiet place." In Chinese, "you(幽)" means "quiet, deep, and tranquil," encompassing a sense of solitude and implicit beauty.
The main difference between Chinese classical gardens and Western gardens lies here. Western garden architecture often reveals itself at a glance, such as the Palace of Versailles in France. Once you enter the gate, the entire garden's scenery is laid out before your eyes. On the other hand, Eastern gardens are often more reserved, requiring a slower and more attentive approach to fully appreciate their charm.
In Episode 16 of "Empresses in the Palace," An Lingrong coincidentally encounters Zhen Huan here.
In addition to visiting the "Zhenhuan Universal Resort" for a photo opportunity, you can also visit the Red Chamber Culture and Art Museum. The main architectural highlights of the Red Chamber Culture and Art Museum include the Provincial Villa, which consists of the Imperial Consort's Villa, the Grand View Garden Pavilion, the Red Chamber Culture and Art Pavilion, the Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall, as well as the Pavilion for Redology Works and Research. Visiting the Grand View Garden allows you not only to understand the profound and extensive culture of Redology but also to witness the vivid depiction of the scenery described in the book right before your eyes.
Furthermore, at the Grand View Garden, you can also experience traditional cultural activities. In the "Xiang (Fragrance)" Cultural-themed Creative Space located in Hengwu Garden, you can not only admire incense burners and incense boxes but also participate in making incense bags and incense plaques. These handmade items can be preserved for thirty to fifty years.
Collecting stamps is one of the highlights of the activities in the Grand View Garden. By purchasing a stamp collection booklet from the Manbu Red Mansion Creative Store in Hengwu Garden, you can collect 44 stamps. The creative content is not limited to stamp collecting; there are also blind boxes, magnetic bookmarks, ice cream, and other items available. Additionally, you can experience traditional activities such as making lipstick, lanterns, copying poetry, and pitch-pot (a traditional Chinese game that requires players to throw arrows or sticks from a set distance into a large, sometimes ornate, canister).
