2023-11-09

As the cold wave of late autumn arrives and the temperature drops sharply, seize the tail of the beautiful autumn scenery, shuttle through the hutongs of Beijing, pick up the golden leaves at the end of the alley, see the "autumn appreciation" cats on the roofs, push open the mottled gray tiles and red doors, and you will always find unexpected surprises.

01 Dongjiaomin Xiang

Dongjiaomin Xiang is the longest hutong in old Beijing. It belonged to Nanxunfang in the Ming Dynasty and was called "Dongjiaomin Xiang". In the late Qing Dynasty, it was a gathering place for foreign embassies. In the past, it witnessed the national rejuvenation for a hundred years; today, it has become a historical and cultural protection area.

Gothic churches, red-roofed small western-style buildings, stained glass windows and western-style gates, sunset, falling leaves, persimmon trees... In the deep autumn of Dongjiaomin Xiang, there are both profound historical connotations and romantic season blessings.

Riding the autumn wind, strolling here, the ups and downs of the past hundred years are all entrusted here. This autumn Citywalk is the most appropriate way to explore the traces of time and the fireworks of the market here.

02 Shijia Hutong

Shijia Hutong is one of the third batch of historical and cultural blocks in Beijing, and the hutong texture formed since the Yuan Dynasty has been preserved almost intact. There are also a large number of traditional courtyard houses and celebrity residences. No. 24 courtyard, where the Shijia Hutong Museum is located, was the former residence of the modern writer Ling Shuhua.

In October, the Shijia Hutong Museum celebrated its tenth anniversary. The museum held a special exhibition entitled "Community: Discovery, Participation, and Future - Shijia Hutong Museum's Tenth Anniversary Exhibition". In the exhibition, visitors can see thousands of messages left by visitors over the past ten years, listen to the voices of volunteers and residents who participated in museum activities and construction, and see the rich results of the Shijia Hutong Museum's participation in community cultivation and promotion of block protection and renewal work over the past ten years. The exhibition will continue until December 30th.

Now is the time when the autumn is the strongest, and the colorful autumn leaves decorate the alleys particularly beautifully. Let's walk into Shijia Hutong together and feel the quiet beauty of autumn.

03 Guozijian Street

Walking into Guozijian Street, the charm of "slow street and simple academy" gradually becomes stronger. The Imperial Academy (Guozijian), the highest ancient academy in China, and the Temple of Confucius, one of the four major Confucian temples, are located here. This is also the only old street in Beijing that retains four archways. It exudes the charm of Chinese culture everywhere. Strolling here, you can experience both the comfort of the hutongs and the weight of history.

The Temple of Confucius and the Imperial Academy Museum are located at No. 15 Guozijian Street. They were built in the Yuan Dynasty and followed the ancient system of "temple left, school right". They served as the place for the emperor to worship Confucius and the highest educational institution in the country. Both groups of buildings were constructed along the central axis in the traditional Chinese architectural style of symmetrical balance, forming a complete, magnificent, and splendid ancient architectural complex.

The autumn sun shines through the leaves and falls on the red walls and surrounding gatehouses, making people want to slow down and enjoy the moment of tranquility.

04 Wudaoying Hutong

Wudaoying Hutong is a hutong located between the North Second Ring Road's Andingmen and Yonghegong. Due to its well-preserved historical and cultural features and comfortable environment, many people choose to settle here and open shops.

Whether it's a fresh and elegant restaurant, a diverse creative boutique, a peaceful café, or a delicate handicraft workshop, they can be found everywhere here.

Many green plants are planted on both sides of the hutong. In the summer, the trees provide shade, and in the autumn, there are patches of red leaves. There are beautiful views in every season.

In this peaceful hutong and courtyard, you can sometimes hear the sound of wild cats running across the roof tiles. Walking in Wudaoying Hutong, you can feel the integration of ancient architecture and modern life, as if you have traveled through time.

Wudaoying Hutong is telling a new story of the old hutong in a different style.

05 Beiluogu Xiang

Beiluogu Xiang is located on the east side of the Drum Tower. The Drum Tower is the endpoint of Beijing's central axis, and there are many historical sites nearby.

Recently, the leaves of the Chinese ash trees in Beiluogu Xiang have turned from green to yellow and are freely stretching on the low eaves. When the autumn wind blows, the tiny yellow leaves fly in the air. Walking among them is like strolling in a beautiful autumn painting.

Perhaps only those who have been to Beiluogu Xiang can understand what it means to "steal half a day of leisure". Here, you don't need to hurry, nor do you have the pressure of "checking in". The surrounding shops seem to be just decorations of the old street. The light and shadow, pedestrians, and car bells all have a perfect sense of boundary, allowing you to fully enjoy the autumn.
