Two local products cultivation system of Beijing added to China's Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System

2023-10-25

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced 'The Seventh Batch of China's Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.' Beijing's Huairou Chestnut Cultivation System and Mentougou Jingbai Pear Cultivation System were included in this list. Prior to this, Beijing already had two Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System, namely the Beijing Jingxi Rice Culture System and the Beijing Pinggu Four Tower Mahogany Walnut Production System.

The documented history of chestnut cultivation in Huairou can be traced back over two thousand years. Chestnuts from Huairou have been presented as tribute to the imperial courts during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 2007, Huairou was awarded the chestnut geographic indication certification trademark. Currently, there are approximately 9 million chestnut trees planted in 217,000 mu (around 14,467 hectares) land all over the region. Among them, nearly 47,000 trees are self-sown chestnut trees that are over a century old, playing a significant role in ecological development and increasing farmers' income.

The Jingbai Pear is the only local fruit in Beijing named with the character 'Jing'. Since pears have a self-incompatibility characteristic, crossbreeding and grafting are necessary for quality improvement. Jingbai Pear is a rare naturally grown variety that has significant importance in preserving agricultural germplasm resources. Dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it served as tribute to the imperial courts. Today, two Jingbai Pear trees can still be found in front of the Shoukang Palace (The Palace of Longevity and Good Health) in the Forbidden City.
