Important Things to Know Before You Apply for S2 Visa

To whom it may concern :

1.Family members paying a short-term visit to foreigners staying or residing in Beijing due to work, study or other reasons. These family members may include spouses, parents, in-laws, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and children's spouses.

2. Foreigners who need to stay in Beijing due to other personal reasons.

What to prepare in advance :

1. Valid passport or other international travel documents .

2. Complete the VISA/STAY PERMIT/RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION FORM with black ink, attached with a recent color photo (bare-headed, full face) taken against a white background, measuring 35mm (wide) by 53mm (high).

3. Valid accommodation registration of the applicant either at a local police station in their place of residence or the hotel where they are staying.

4. S2 visa holders shall provide their foreign residence documents and proof of family relationship or kinship.

The proof of family relationship or kinship refers to certificates that establish the relationship between family members or relatives, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, adoption registration certificates, and notarial certificates.

Applicants who do not hold an S2 visa and are applying for a visa renewal of S2 shall provide supporting documents that demonstrates their family relationship or kinship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or a notarial certificate, and other relevant documents issued by foreign authorities or notary offices. These documents must be authenticated by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home country.

Notes: If the aforementioned documents cannot be provided, the applicant may voluntarily provide other relevant supporting documents. When applying again, if the family member being visited has not changed, supporting documents for family relationship or kinship are not required.

5. Applicants who have other private businesses should submit supporting documents to explain their private matters or humanitarian reasons.

Timeline for Application

1. Applicants visiting family members may apply for an extension of up to 180 days, while others may apply for an extension of up to 90 days.

2. For the renewal of S2 visa, applicants may apply for a zero or single entry visa with a valid entry period of no more than three months and a maximum stay duration of 180 days. The total duration of stay for the renewed visa cannot exceed one year from the date of the latest entry.

3. The extension of S2 visa for a longer duration is only applicable to the current entry and does not affect the entry times or validity period of the original visa. The total length of the extension shall not exceed the duration of stay specified in the original visa.

Notes

1. The applicants are required to go through a face-to-face interview. However, if the applicant is under the age of 16 or above 60, or has mobility difficulties due to illness or other reasons, the inviter, the applicant's family members, or relevant service agencies may submit the application on their behalf (a photocopy of the trustee's ID documents is required). Nevertheless, if the exit-entry administration department deems an interview necessary, the applicant must attend the interview in person.

2. For the above materials, the original documents along with their photocopies need to be submitted for verification.

3. Any application material written in a foreign language (excluding English) should be translated into Chinese.

4. Applicants who have not yet canceled their household registration in China shall submit their application after the cancellation.

5. Foreigners under the age of 18 who submit the application for the first time in China shall provide their birth certificate, passports and permanent residence permits of their parents, along with any other relevant documents as proof of their nationality.

Reminders on Laws and Regulations

1. Foreigners who wish to extend their stay in China shall submit their application to the exit-entry administration department of the public security authority under the local people's government at or above the county level at least seven days prior to the expiration of their visa’s validity period.

2. While the applicant's passport or other travel documents is under legal custody of the exit-entry administration department for visa processing, they may lawfully stay and reside within China’s territory by presenting the application receipt notice.

3. The exit and entry administration department of the public security authority may verify the purpose of the application through such means as interviewtelephone inquiry and on-site investigations.

4. Decisions made by the exit-entry administration department of the public security authority to reject applications for the extension, renewal or re-issuance of ordinary visas, or to not issue stay or residence permits, or to not extend the duration of residence, shall be considered final.
