City Sounds at the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven

2023-09-22

Located in the trendy Sanlitun area, the towering China Zun building, the majestic Shouhuang Palace in Jingshan, the grand Temple of Heaven... The music concerts step out of the concert halls and meet with traditional ancient architecture and urban landmarks in modern cities. Since inviting the Zhu Zongqing Percussion Group to hold a special concert in Sanlitun in 2011, the Beijing Music Festival's "Urban Series" has been launched. The beautiful classical music dances gracefully in the concert hall and echoes in every corner of the bustling city.

As the first art organization in China to introduce the concept of "stepping out of the concert hall and into the city," the Beijing Music Festival has continuously planned and launched the "Urban Series" historical and cultural business cards. Through the "Urban Series," it deeply integrates the urban life and culture of the ancient capital Beijing, creating a unique new way of experiencing music that can only be found in Beijing.

This year, the Beijing Music Festival and the Beijing Park Management Center have launched a special collaboration, presenting the "Music in Famous Parks" series, which features high-quality indoor music classics from China and abroad that resonate with Beijing's rich historical and cultural heritage.

As a cultural landmark closely related to the music culture in the well-known cultural heritage "Beijing Central Axis" in the southern section, the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven has been successfully selected as the first performance venue for the "Music in Famous Parks" series, continuing the concept of the "Urban Series" of stepping into urban landmarks and delving into urban life, creating a new connection between music culture and Beijing city life.

This year's Beijing Music Festival will showcase Beijing's profound cultural heritage and open innovation in three midday concerts in collaboration with the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven.

The "New Wind of Guqin" concert by Gong Linna and Lin Chen will kick off the "Music in Famous Parks" series. The combination of Chinese guqin and vocals is a traditional literati art, and qin song is an important part of literati music. As the highest instrument in Chinese traditional culture, the guqin has always been popular among literati and scholars. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the inclusion of guqin art in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the passionate singer Gong Linna and the silent guqin player Lin Chen will premiere the narrative qin song "Hu Jia Shiba Pai" at the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven, bringing new vitality to guqin art. The "Chinese concept" of the Beijing Music Festival telling Chinese stories in a world language coincides with the grand narrative of the Eastern Han Dynasty female poet Cai Wenji, told in a rich and powerful manner.

The duet of three musician couples from Beijing and Hong Kong is the second performance team of the "Music in Famous Gardens" series. They will jointly present a chamber concert at the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven. From the duet of two violins to the duet of flute and clarinet, these two rare duet forms in the chamber music stage will be presented in this performance. Although the two violins have the same range, they have the beauty of singing and harmony. The two performers sometimes confront each other and do not give in to each other, and sometimes present the tenderness and sweetness of harmony. The wonderful and varied music pieces emerge one after another. Compared with the duet of flute and double reed, which are both bright-toned instruments in the symphony orchestra, the former is bright and high-pitched, and the latter is mellow and gentle. However, the common gentle attribute of the two instruments makes their combination almost one of the most beautiful duet forms. Here, we will jointly experience this unique and wonderful sound.

In the third performance of the "Music in Famous Gardens" series, the famous tenor singer Mo Hualun will join hands with pianist Chen Yu to sing art songs from China and abroad at the Divine Music Administration Temple of Heaven. When the most concise literary form-poetry meets the simple but infinitely expressive piano solo, this combination becomes a tool for composers to express poetic feelings. At the concert, the two musicians will bring various art songs from different languages and cultural backgrounds.
