Traditional Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery Art and Life Exhibition

2023-09-01

The Splendid China, Summit of the Forbidden City - Traditional Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery Art and Life Exhibition opened at Jingshan Park. This exhibition brings together a variety of palace weaving and embroidery art projects related to the central axis, showcasing the treasures of traditional culture and highlighting the long-standing cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. It further highlights the unique value of the central axis as an important national cultural heritage.

The exhibition is divided into two sections: "Embroidery Skills" and "Weaving Skills". The exhibition hall's spatial design is based on the perspective image of the "Twelve Months of the Year" in the Qing Dynasty, using lightweight wooden frames wrapped in fabric to create layered "screens" that enclose and yet open up the space to accommodate a variety of outdoor activities. The indoor space also borrows the unique function of the "screen", with a unified mask in front of the display case, becoming a layer of thin gauze clothing that wraps around the original display window. The middle part of the indoor space is hung with curved brocade, echoing the undulating roof of the ancient building, while also conveying the winding mountains and rivers of China through design.

In terms of presentation, the exhibition takes the unique "liveness" characteristic of intangible cultural heritage as its anchor, using exhibition, display, and performance forms to showcase intangible cultural heritage projects related to the cultural space on the central axis, such as Suzhou embroidery, Beijing embroidery, Kesi, Song brocade, Yun brocade, etc. It tells the special historical background of their "embroidery and service to the palace" and takes the opportunity of "Splendid China" and "Central Axis" to link contemporary life, activate the central axis culture, meet the new expectations of the people's spiritual and cultural life, and promote cultural exchange and mutual learning.

The exhibition will continue until October this year. In addition to static exhibitions, from August 14th to October 8th, on-site performances combining cultural space, opera, music, dance, and storytelling will allow audiences to hear, see, smell, taste, and touch the cultural charm related to the central axis.
