Recently, with approval, the Shanhaiguan Great Wall Museum has been officially named.
The Shanhaiguan Great Wall Museum is located at the foot of the Jiaoshan Mountain in Shanhaiguan, Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, at the base of the Great Wall. It covers an area of 106 acres, with a building area of approximately 30,000 square meters, and a total investment of 420 million yuan. The museum is designed and constructed strictly according to the three-star rating standard for green buildings. It fully employs related green building technologies from design to construction, aiming to save resources, reduce pollution, protect the environment, and provide a healthy, suitable, and efficient space for people. Once completed, it will become the first three-star green building museum in China.
The Shanhaiguan Great Wall Museum is positioned as the most influential modern comprehensive museum for the protection, inheritance, and utilization of the Great Wall cultural heritage. It will comprehensively showcase the origins and development of the Great Wall, its architecture and construction, military and defense aspects, garrison life, economic and cultural significance, as well as the protection, inheritance, and utilization of Great Wall relics in the 15 provinces and cities along its route.
As an important core venue of the Great Wall National Cultural Park, the Shanhaiguan Great Wall Museum relies on the abundant cultural and historical resources of the Great Wall in Qinhuangdao. It draws extensively from domestic Great Wall-related collections and the exhibition strengths of top-notch domestic museums, aiming to create a modern comprehensive museum for the protection and inheritance of the Great Wall.
Shanhaiguan District of Qinhuangdao City boasts a rich history and culture, with abundant Great Wall resources. The Shanhaiguan section of the Great Wall was designated as one of the first batches of national key cultural relic protection units in 1961. Subsequently, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, standing as the foremost among the Three Passes of the Great Wall of China. It is considered the most essential segment of the Great Wall, featuring various forms including the Seaside Great Wall, Coastal Great Wall, Plain Great Wall, and Mountainous Great Wall. It is hailed as a natural Great Wall museum, renowned for its title of “The First Pass Under Heaven is Unparalleled, Locks of the Capital and the Second Capital,” representing its significance in guarding the northern frontiers.
