Beihang University opens its on-campus Aerospace Museum

2023-08-04

With the arrival of the summer vacation, major museums in Beijing are experiencing a peak in visitor numbers. The museums located on universities are known as treasures within the "ivory tower" due to their diverse categories and abundant resources. There is an increasing demand from the public for these museums to be open for public visits. Recently, the Beijing Aerospace Museum, located on the Beihang University, opened its doors to visitors. Within a month, nearly 15,000 visitors, including both students and the general public, have visited the museum for learning and exploration.

Inside the Beijing Aerospace Museum, over 300 domestic and foreign aerospace artifacts and precious equipment are displayed in four exhibition areas: "Dreaming in the Vast Sky," "Eagle Soaring in the Sky," "Shenzhou Space Exploration," and "Sky Corridor." The museum, which was expanded from the original aircraft structure display room and aircraft hangar of Beihang University, now showcases aircraft from different eras in a large area. The presence of these "giants" that once soared in the sky has captured the attention of many young visitors.

In order to provide a more immersive museum experience for visitors, Beihang University has selected more than 40 college student volunteers who will provide volunteer guided tours on a rotating basis during the summer vacation.

Zhi Yuanyuan, the curator of Beihang University's Historical Archives and Cultural Relics Museum, introduced that since the COVID-19 pandemic were treated as category B disease, the museum has gradually opened to alumni, as well as friends and family of faculty and students. This summer, the museum continues to fulfill its role in public science education and, under the premise of complying with regulations, is opening its doors to a wider audience in an orderly manner. Within a month, the museum has already received nearly 15,000 visitors, including 85 organized groups, for learning and exploration.
