Starting from August 1st, the Beijing Folk Museum (Dongyue Temple) and its branch museum (Beiding Niangniang Temple) are open to the public. After more than two years of ancient building restoration and preservation, the 700-year-old Dongyue Temple reveals its true appearance once again, and over 400 sets of exquisite cultural relics in the collection are presented to the audience.
Built during the Yuan Dynasty, Beijing's Dongyue Temple covers an area of 36,000 square meters. It not only preserves the ancient architectural complex in the styles of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties but also possesses a large number of stone artifacts, exquisite colored sculptures and paintings from the Ming Dynasty, as well as couplets, plaque inscriptions, and other cultural relics and traditional cultural imprints. This restoration is the first large-scale protective restoration project undertaken by the Beijing Folk Museum in over 20 years since its establishment. It involves nearly 8,000 square meters of buildings including the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, Daiyue Hall, Seventy-Six Departments, and Rear Covering Tower. The restoration work focuses on the removal and renovation of oil decorations, eaves beams, carved boards, floors, and walls along the central axis of the temple. The traditional craftsmanship of the central axis complex is restored, using the "one hemp and five ash" technique to rebuild the base layer between the wooden structure and paint, protecting the columns, windows, and other wood materials from insect damage and moisture intrusion. The next step will involve the survey and research on colored paintings and sculptures, laying the foundation for their restoration and preservation.
At the same time, the restoration project of the branch museum, Beiding Niangniang Temple, has also been successfully completed and opened on the same day.
On the opening day, the Beijing Folk Museum carefully launched four exhibitions: "Historical Exhibition of Dongyue Temple", "Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Instruments Cultural Relics", "Jade Rabbit Envoy: Exhibition of Rabbit Zodiac Cultural Relics in Beijing Folk Museum" and "Taishan Shadow Puppetry Theme Culture Exhibition". The branch museum, Beiding Niangniang Temple, showcases the exhibition "Exhibition of Four Treasures of Chinese Literati Cultural Relics", presenting a wide range of theme cultural relics spanning over 5,000 years and more than 400 sets, including aspects such as zodiac culture, intangible cultural heritage inheritance, literati elegance, and the development of traditional Chinese medicine.
