Exhibition of Gold and Bronze Statues of Buddhism and Daoism Made Its Debut at Handan Museum

2023-07-05

In order to further promote excellent traditional Chinese culture, facilitate the revitalization of cultural heritage resources, and enhance cultural exchanges between the East and West regions, the exhibition of gold and bronze statues of Buddhism and Daoism made its debut at the Handan Museum on June 30th. This exhibition is led by Pingliang Museum in collaboration with Jing Chuan Museum, Lintai Museum, Chongxin Museum, Huating Museum, Zhuanglang Museum, and Jingning Museum.

Deeply rooted in our country's indigenous culture, Daoism draws its origins from the Daoist philosophy of pre-Qin dynasty, encompassing wisdom of various dynasties and embracing all aspects of life. It is vast and profound. Buddhism, originating from ancient India, was introduced to China during the Han Dynasty and has since integrated and developed in harmony with Confucianism and Daoism, continuously thriving. Pingliang, located in the eastern section of the ancient Silk Road, boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. With its longstanding Daoist traditions and abundant Buddhist relics, the region showcases a diverse range of gold and bronze statues in distinct styles, exquisite forms, and rich symbolism, reflecting distinct historical and regional characteristics. The exhibition carefully selects 111 exquisite gold and bronze statues from seven museums in city and counties of Pingliang. It is divided into two sections: "Daoist Essence of Kongtong" and "Buddhist Melodies of Jingchuan." Spanning from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, these artworks possess remarkable historical and regional features, embodying a wealth of historical, religious, ethnic, and artistic value.

With the rapid development of the museum industry, inter-museum exchange exhibitions have become the most important method to expand the influence of museums and reach a wider audience. This exhibition marks the first time that Pingliang's cultural relics have ventured beyond Northwest China, presenting a splendid showcase before audiences in the developed cities of the East. By activating and utilizing cultural resources, and using output exhibitions as a link, a platform for collaborative exchange between the East and the West has been established, promoting regional cultural exchange and mutual learning. It aims to better promote Pingliang's cultural and tourism resources, enhance its influence and dissemination power in cultural tourism, and propel the high-quality development of the museum industry.

The exhibition is displayed in Hall C2 on the second floor, east side, of the Handan Museum. It will be open from June 30th to September 3rd.
