Tantuo Temple - An Ancient Temple in Western Beijing Older than the City Itself
"When an ancient tree becomes an emperor's throne, and the sound of bells accompanies the Chan gate, there can be no mention of Mentougou without Tanzhe Temple." Tanzhe Temple, dating back to the Western Jin Dynasty (around 316 AD), is the earliest Buddhist temple built in the Beijing area. Its name originates from the dragon pond behind the temple and the Chinese wisteria tree in front, hence the name "Tanzhe". With its rich history and numerous legends, Tanzhe Temple exudes an air of mystery and profoundness.
The temple boasts different beautiful sceneries throughout the seasons, surrounded by mountains and towering ancient trees, making it particularly enchanting in summer and autumn. The temple's "Two Treasures" have also gained fame. The "Treasure Pot" in front of the Hall of Heavenly Kings, used by the monks for cooking and boiling porridge, and the "Stone Fish" in the Hall of Dragon Kings, where the popular internet phrase "no idle allowed" originates. Visitors come here to touch the stone fish, hoping it will bring them good luck.
Another significant highlight is the "Emperor's Tree" within the temple grounds. This ancient ginkgo tree is over a thousand years old, standing over 30 meters tall. It was once bestowed the title of "Emperor's Tree" by Emperor Qianlong. According to legend, whenever a new emperor ascended the throne, a new branch would grow, and when an emperor passed away, a branch would break off. As a result, many people come here to pay homage to this legendary tree.
"Amusing wanderers in the mundane world, a few find temporary solace here." When visiting Tanzhe Temple, one can temporarily set aside the weariness of the constant hustle and bustle. Don't miss the chance to find a moment of peace, whether by trying the incense for blessings, folding hands in prayer, or simply taking a stroll amidst the serene temple and mountains.

Jietai Temple - The Foremost of the Three Great Ordination Platforms in China, a Millennium-Old Ancient Temple
Jietai Temple in Mentougou was first built during the Sui Dynasty in the reign of Emperor Yang of Sui and has a history of over 1,400 years. It is approximately a one-hour drive from downtown Beijing. The temple is home to various Buddhist relics from the Liao Dynasty, including pagodas, ancient bells, scripture columns, and ordination platforms. Together with Zhaoqing Temple in Hangzhou and Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou, Jietai Temple is known as one of the three great ordination platforms in China. The temple is surrounded by lush green trees, towering ancient pines, and colorful flower beds, creating a serene and picturesque atmosphere. The temple's terrain is gently sloping, with almost flat ground except for the steps leading up and down the major halls, making it suitable for both the elderly and children.
Inside the temple, there is a typical old Beijing-style courtyard known as the Peony Courtyard, where peonies are cultivated. The famous Prince Gong (Yixin) of the Qing dynasty once lived in seclusion here for ten years. Renowned Peking Opera artist Mei Lanfang and Tan Xinpei also discussed their craft and sought spiritual solace here, drawing inspiration for their future theatrical creations from the tranquility of the surroundings. Visitors can enjoy tea and copy Buddhist scriptures in the courtyard, making it an ideal place for a relaxing break.
In the scorching summer days, the temperature inside the temple is relatively cooler due to the shade of the trees. For those who enjoy hiking, they can also explore the nearby mountain trails to appreciate the beautiful scenery of the mountains and the wilderness. Especially on weekdays when there are fewer visitors, one can experience the tranquility away from the noise and disturbances, truly understanding the saying, "Only genuine gold is qualified to be mounted, and a laughing Buddha points to the true round ordination platform."
