The Sound Art Museum was established in 2020 and entered the internal trial operation stage in February 2023. On March 29, 2023, it was officially certified by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics as a class A museum. It will be open to the public on May 19, 2023.
The museum focuses on the exploration, collection, preservation, and dissemination of sound works as a contemporary non-profit cultural institution that uses sound as a medium. It establishes a sound-centered ecosystem by integrating multiple disciplines and art forms with a new way of thinking in the “linking everything in our lives with sound” relationship. At the same time, it exports multi-level and multi-structured exhibitions and key sound culture projects nationwide, making practical ideas circulate around the world.
The Sound Art Museum consists of the “Sound Station” (permanent exhibition), “Sound Art Space” (temporary exhibition hall), “Ruogu Building” (sound experimental project base), and “Sound Activity Center” (Sound Childhood, Sound Therapy Experience Lab, Sound Archive, Multi-functional Hall, Artist Residency Center, and Pigeon Whistle Base), among others.
The “Sound Station” is a permanent exhibition area that showcases six themes: “Old Beijing Sound”, “Natural Sound”, “Speech”, “Music”, “What is Sound”, as well as “Sound and Emotion”. The “Sound Art Space” is a contemporary art space where relevant artists and musicians will be regularly invited to create exclusive works based on the space layout.
As the core academic venue of the Sound Art Museum, the Sound Archive consists of archive exhibitions (Old Beijing exhibition projects, Sound Station video archive exhibitions, and Audio Guest exhibition contents), archive materials (sound media, books), audio interaction, sound collection materials, and archive systems (databases, sound archives), providing visitors with academic spaces for relevant literature and archive exhibitions, data queries, and learning.
