Kunming Lake becomes "Swan Lake"

2023-03-15

Several groups of white swans have passed by Kunming Lake for a temporary rest this spring as the environment of the Summer Palace is getting better.

On 14 March, about 50 white swans were seen flying over the lake and finally stop here. Against the peach blossom and green willow in the West Embankment, those beautiful creatures attracted many tourists and the Kunming Lake becomes Swan Lake.

Kunming Lake covers an area of more than 3,300 mu, about three quarters of the Summer Palace. After the Jin Dynasty, royal garden was gradually built here, and it formed the Summer Palace on a grand scale in the Qing Dynasty. After the Republic of China, it became a park.

Kunming Lake was the only surface water source for Beijing until the Yongding River diversion canal was completed in 1956. The Beijing-Miyun diversion canal, completed in 1966, also uses Kunming Lake as its main reservoir and is the lifeblood in Beijing.
