Oldest, most complete murals in Beijing alive

2023-02-10

The oldest and most complete murals are alive in the Fahai Temple in the west of Beijing.

At the south foot of Cuiwei Mountain in the west of Beijing, Fahai Temple has ten murals of the Ming Dynasty with the highest level dating back nearly 600 years. Now, a new mural art museum has been built at the foot of the mountain, and the murals are presented digitally, so that visitors can get an immersive viewing experience without going to Fahai Temple.

The mural art museum has included the exploration and accumulation of cultural relic protection in Shijingshan District over the years. The precious digital assets formed by modern technological means are used to make the "sleeping" murals come alive, becoming another example to show the cultural confidence of Beijing in the new era.

In the history of mural art in China, the murals of Fahai Temple represent the highest level of an era. In terms of artistic level, scale, painting skills, production techniques and preservation integrity, Fahai Temple murals are among the best in China's Ming Dynasty murals. They're the rare exquisite murals made by court painters in China since the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Compared with the murals of Dunhuang and Yongle Palace, they have their own merits, and can be on a par with the murals of the European Renaissance. In recent years, digital information technology has played an increasingly important role in the protection and management of Fahai Temple.
