5. The Fragrant Hill
Fragrant Hill is a royal garden with mountain and forest characteristics, and is now a national 4A scenic spot. The highest peak is Xianglu Peak, 557 meters above sea level. Although Fragrant Hill is not very high, there are many attractions in the area. The Shuangqing Villa here was the old residence of Mao Zedong when he entered Beijing, where the old generation of revolutionaries greeted the victory of the People's Liberation War. 6. The Ming Tombs
The Ming Tombs, the mausoleum complex of thirteen emperors of the Ming Dynasty, is a World Heritage Site and a national 5A scenic spot. The Ming Tombs are now open to visitors: the God Way, the Dingling Mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Yijun, the Changling Mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Di, and the Zhaoling Mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Zhaihou. The Dingling Mausoleum is the only one of the thirteen tombs that opens the underground palace to the public, but its Ling'en Palace has been burnt down by Li Zicheng; emperor Zhu Di's Changling has a Ling'en Palace made of golden-wood but without an underground palace. Visitors who visit the Ming Tombs had better drive themselves, as the distance between the tombs is a bit far.
