Yongning Ancient Town
Located 17 kilometers east of Yanqing District, Yongning Ancient Town has a long history. In the 12th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1414 AD), Ming Emperor Zhu Di set up Yongning County, and then the Thirteen Tombs were built in the county, so there is a saying that is “first there is Yongning Town, then there are Thirteen Tombs”. In the fifth year of Xuande (1430), Yongning town became an important military site in the defense system of the Great Wall. In the seventeenth year of Wanli (1589), 4 city gates were rebuilt, with Yinghui in the east, Zhenning in the west, Xuan'an in the south, and Weiyuan in the north. The city originally had prefectural offices, such as the county office, as well as the DrumTower, Bell Tower, and Jade Emperor Pavilion. Among them, the Jade Emperor Pavilion is the landmark building of Yongning Ancient Town, which was built in the eighteenth year of Tang Zhenguan (644) and is 28.2 meters high. The Cross Street in the city is composed of Shanzheng Street in the east, Guangwu Street in the west, Fumin Street in the south, and Gongji Street in the north. There are 15 large and small alleys in the eastern half of the city and 17 alleys in the western half of the city. Most of them were destroyed due to war and other reasons. Yongning Ancient Town has a typical northern square city pattern. The four gates are built with a barbican, and outside the barbican is a moat.
