Beijing duck is a geographical indication of Beijing agricultural products. In order to let more people know it, Beijing Duck Historical Culture Center settled in Qianlu Duck farm, Beixiaoying Town, Shunyi District. At present, the venterhas been completed and will be open to the public.
When visitors enter the cultural center, the antique scene reproduces the Bell Tower, Taishoufu Mansion, farming school, farming garden, rice field and other pictures, telling the history of Beijing duck breeding since the Han Dynasty. "The origin of Beijing duck is closely related to the cultivation of rice." Huang Li, curator of Beijing Duck History and Culture Center and head of Shunyi Qianlu Duck Farm, introduced that according to the Book of the Later Han, in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Beixiaoying area belonged to the Hunu County of Yuyang County, and the Guangwu Emperor Liu Xiu transferred Zhang Kan from Shu to Yuyang County as the military and political prefect. At that time Yuyang County agriculture was very backward, Zhang Kang combined with the geographical characteristics of Hunu County, and taught the south of the rice planting experience to the local people, planting more than 8,000 hectares of rice. At the same time, a large number of ducks were raised here. Ducks dewormed and weeded the rice, and the duck manure was returned to the field to fertilize the rice field. The rice field provided food and a place for the ducks to live and perch. The two complement each other and coexist in harmony.
With the changes of the times, Beijing roasted duck has become famous at home and abroad. Beijing duck has become a characteristic and high-quality agricultural product of Beijing. In 2017, Beijing Duck won the national Geographical indication certification of agricultural products, and in 2020, it was included in the China-EU Mutual Recognition List of Geographical Indications. "In the past, 80 percent of ducks in the Beijing Roast Duck market came from the Qianlu Duck Farm in Beixiaoying Town, Shunyi District." Huang Li said that due to changes in the industrial structure, the former Lu duck factory has stopped production. Today, the idle factory has been transformed into the Beijing Duck Historical and Cultural Center, covering a total area of 2,150 square meters.
In 2022, Beijing launched the protection project of geographical indications for Beijing duck agricultural products. At present, the geographical protection of Beijing duck geographical indications covers 46 towns and streets in 8 districts of Beijing, which has led to more than 1,800 farming households in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
