The temple is located on Ma'anshan in the Mentougou District of Beijing, 35 kilometers from the capital and 11 kilometers from the Mentougou District Government. Jile Peak in the west, Six Kingdoms Ridge in the south, Shilong Mountain in the north, and Beijing downtown in the east. The monastery is more than 300 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 4.4 hectares and has a construction area of 8,392 square meters.
The well-arranged halls are built according to the height of the mountain, with the grandeur of the northern monasteries and the quiet elegance of the garden on the Yangtze delta. It is not only a famous monastery of Chinese Buddhism but also a famous tourist attraction, a national key cultural relics protection unit, and AAAA grade scenic spot.
The temple was built in the fifth year of Wude (622 AD) of the Tang Dynasty with a history of 1400 years since then. It was named Huiju Temple originally, Emperor Yingzong period of the Ming Dynasty gave the name Wanshou Zen Temple. Because the largest Buddhist altar in China was built inside the temple, it is commonly known as the Jietan Temple, also known as the Jietai Temple.
From ancient times to the present, the temple has occupied an important position in the Chinese Buddhist circle. With the largest scale in China, it is one of the highest schools of Buddhism in China. Therefore it is known as "the first altar in the world".
Jietai Temple is the most complete temple in China with the most cultural relics of the Liao Dynasty. Its preserved pagodas and Buddhist altars are rare and precious Liao Dynasty cultural relics.
