If you want to find a splendid place to enjoy autumn hidden in the capital, the golden ginkgo leaves in the Five Pagoda Temple are memorable! In this temple, you can watch the ginkgo leaves and ginkgo nuts hanging on the branches, the majestic pagoda and ancient ginkgoes reflecting each other, and the golden leaves spreading over the courtyard, which creates the most beautiful scenery in late autumn!
The Five Pagoda Temple, also called the Beijing Stone Carving Art Museum, is located on the north bank of the scenic Changhe River and was originally named Zhenjue Temple.
Zhenjue Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, that was built in the Ming Chengzu Yongle (1403-1424) period when a monk from the West dedicated five gold Buddhas and a model of Vajrasana Pagoda to the Yongle Emperor. Zhu Di gave land for its construction, and the temple was called "Zhenjue". In the Qing Dynasty, to avoid the name of Yongzheng Emperor "Yinzhen”, the name was changed to "Zhengjue Temple". The temple was demolished during the Republican period, and only the vajra throne and a few stone carvings survived.
The Beijing Stone Carving Art Museum is a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty architecture and stone carving art, and an example of the combination of Chinese and foreign cultures. The museum is located in the former site of the Ming and Qing dynasty royal monastery, Zhenjue Temple. The temple is also known as the "Five Pagoda Temple" because of the five pagodas on the platform on top of the Vajrasana Pagoda inside the temple.
Beijing Stone Carving Art Museum is a thematic museum collecting, studying and displaying stone carving relics and stone carving art in Beijing. Now it is a National Tertiary Museum, Beijing Patriotism Education Base and Beijing Science Popularization Education Base.
Enjoying ginkgo trees at Five Pagoda Temple
Appreciating ginkgoes has always been the "reserved program" of Five Pagoda Temple in late autumn every year. In front of the Vajra Throne in the center of the temple, there are two ginkgo trees that are nearly 600 years old, both of which are first-class ancient trees in Beijing.
At present, the leaves of the ancient ginkgo trees have begun to gradually turn yellow, and now you can enjoy the "green fan with golden edges" ginkgo leaf landscape.
Around the end of October to the middle and early November, the ancient ginkgo trees at Five Pagoda Temple turn completely yellow. When the autumn breeze blows, clusters of golden leaves are scattered on the ground.
Under the afternoon sunlight, the brilliant ginkgo leaves add a touch of warmth to the Vajrasana Pagoda, and countless visitors come to get a glimpse of the ancient ginkgo tree.
Enjoy persimmons at the Five Pagoda Temple
Persimmon is a deciduous tree in the Persimmon family, native to East Asia. It has been cultivated in China for more than 3,000 years and has the folklore symbolism of good luck.
There are many persimmon trees inside the temple for visitors to enjoy, and the persimmons are starting to turn red, which has attracted many birds to come and eat.
We would like to urge our visitors to "Appreciate instead of tasting". Let's be civilized and not pick persimmons to create a beautiful environment for visiting.
Warm tip: Because persimmons ripen at different levels, it can really fall at any time! Please dodge in time and pay attention to safety when you enjoy persimmons.
