The play was adapted and written by Tian Han, and premiered in October 1952.

This play tells the story of Xu Xian who lives in Qiantang County passing by the West Lake. When it rains, and two girls Bai Suzhen and Xiaoqing, who are White snake and green snake respectively with the same boat with Xu. White snake and Xu love each other and Xu borrows an umbrella with them.They agreed to meet again and later married. Fahai, the Jinshan Temple monk, tells Xu that Bai Suzhen is a snake demon, and teaches Xu to get Bai drunk with realgar wine, and then white snake will appear. The face terrifies Xu Xian. Bai Suzhen steals Gashishi and cures Xu Xian. Xu goes to Jinshan Temple to worship but is detained by Fahai. He doesn’t return. Bai Suzhen with Xiaoqing goes to the Jinshan Temple, pleading for Fahai release Xu, but Fahai doesn’t allow. Bai can not bear him flood the Jinshan Temple. Fahai calls celestial troops and generals to fight with Bai. Bai is defeated because of pregnancy. When Xu Xian arrived at the Fallen Bridge, Xiaoqing draws her sword and wants to kill Xu. Although Bai blames Xu for his unkindness, the three reconcile as before. Bai gives birth to a son. Just a month ago, Fahai comes to take Bai into the gold bowl and presses her under Leifeng Pagoda. Xiaoqing flees back to Mount Emei , practices martial arts. She defeats the pagoda god, topples the Leifeng Pagoda, rescues Bai Suzhen, and reunited her family.
