The play was adapted by Qi Rushan based on the Beijing script The Book of Yin and Yang collected by the Qing Palace, and premiered by Mei Lanfang in 1928 in Beijing.

This play tells the story about the vice minister Cheng Pu retired to his hometown. He had two daughters, the older was Xueyan, who was ugly. The younger called Xuee, born by the concubine, was beautiful and intelligent.

One day, Cheng was traveling with Zhu Huanran, met Mu Juyi, the son of one of his old friend. He was so happy that made an appointment with Mu to meet each other on his birthday dinner.

He told his wife that he intended to marry Xuee to Mu, but his wife wanted to marry Xue yan first. They argued and ended on a sour note.

On his birthday, Zhu Huanran arrived first, and he also had intentions to marry Cheng's daughter. Cheng's wife thought Zhu was Mu by mistake.

Then Mu arrived, Cheng Pu mentioned the marriage and asked hin to stay in the study to discuss about the marriage between Mu and Xuee.

Xueyan knew about it and went to see Mu at night assuming Xuee's name, but Mu refused and fled.

On the way, Mu met Zhu Huanran, Zhu was very happy to have the opportunity, so he pretended to give money and horse, urged Mu to leave.

At the right time, Cheng Pu resumed in accordance with the decree, and went to the army with the inspector Zhou. When he met Mu, he blamed him. Mu answered with excuses. Cheng then took him to the army as well.

Zhu married under the name "Mu," but Cheng's wife got in Xuee's way and married Xueyan instead.

In the bridal chamber, the misunderstanding became clear, but there was no time to regret it.

Local bandits were in chaos, Cheng's wife wanted to seek refuge with Zhu, but Xuee refused to go with her.

Cheng Pu pacified the rebels, welcomed Xuee to the army, and reconsidered the marriage between Mu and Xuee, but Mu still refused.

Supreme commander Hong Gong and inspector Zhou compulsively presided over the marriage, the misunderstanding was first realized in the bridal chamber, Mu apologized hastily.

Zhu Huanran was robbed, taking Cheng’s wife and Xueyan to seek refuge. Then the family reunited.
