This play is based on a mythological story that has been spread for a long time, mainly with three scenes, Naoxue, Shezi, and Datang, which have got popularity on the Beijing Opera stages.

This play tells the story of San Sheng Mu, the numen of Mount Hua, who was trapped under the mountain because she fell in love with Liu Yanchang, an ordinary man and marry him. Their son, Chen Xiang, with the help of the forces of justice in heaven and on earth, split the mountain to save his mother. Based on ancient Chinese folk tales, the original play has been adapted into different plays by many opera schools over years.
