Yu'er Hutong runs east-west, starting from Nanluoguxiang in the east, ending at Dongbuyaqiao Hutong in the west, adjacent to Suoyi Hutong in the south, and Mao'er Hutong in the north. The total length of the hutong is 343 meters and the width is 5 meters. During the Ming Dynasty, it was called Yulong Hutong. And during the Qing Dynasty, it was called Yuer Hutong. The name was changed several times afterwards, but the original name was restored in 1979. This Hutong was built at the same time as the capital city of the Yuan Dynasty. It's also one of the oldest neighborhoods in Beijing. It was once the center of the capital city of the Yuan Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was the place where the nobles gathered.

Many famous people used to live in Yu'er Hutong. For example, the famous painter Qi Baishi used to live in No.13 Yu'er Hutong, which is now a memorial hall of Qi Baishi's old residence. Now, No. 15 Yu'er Hutong is the seat of the China Artists Association, adding to the humanistic atmosphere of this ancient hutong.
