Located in the northwest of the Badaling Great Wall, Chadao Ancient City was built as a military fortress aiming to add another defense to the Great Wall. Based on its old brick foundation, the city was restored, maintaining its precious historic value.

The city was circled by ancient city walls and two city gates, and the west gate is comparatively more vital as it faces the outside. The restored west gate remains the original loess-wall ruins. Outside the city, there is a passway built with stones which vividly records the ups and downs of that time.

As for the origin of its name, Chaodao Ancient City got the name since it stands in a fork road. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chadao as an important military fortress, with the Inn, garrison department, soldiers drilled day and night. Due to the special geographical location, there are many stores and businessmen inside and outside of Chadao ancient city, every year ten thousands of delivery camels from Zhangjiakou to Beijing pass through here.
