Juyongguan Pass: a famous ancient fortress on the Great Wall

Located in Changping District , Juyongguan Pass is a famous ancient fortress along the North Beijing branch of the Great Wall. It is also a critical defender, 20 kilometers away from Badaling, for its perilous terrain, mountains surround it erect grandly in between which lies an 18-kilometer valley named as“Guangou”. Historically, it has long been a battlefield due to its importance in military strategy. What’s more, the scenery here is splendid, as clear brooks wander around jade hills that pile against each other, and chirps and tweets racing out from hills mingle into a dense stretch of flowers and trees. Therefore, it is regarded as one of the Eight Great Sights of Yanjing, with a nomination of “Juyong the Emerald”.

In the middle of the Pass is a foundation bed “ Cross-Street Tower”, named as “ the Panel of Cloud”, which means “ seeing afar I were on the verge of cloud”. There are various scenic spots that enrich the glamour of it: the Fairy Stone, Wulang Temple, Liulang Village, Tanqing Valley, Wangjing Stone, Tianxian, the Sculpture of Mu Guiying and the Bronze Statue of Jeme Tien Yow.

Juyongguan Tunnel is, with a total length of 365 meters, one of the four tunnels whose construction is presided over by Jeme Tien Yow on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway. However, although Line S2 in fact passes through Juyong Pass, it doesn’t have a stop here, therefore tourists on the train can only enjoy the scenery through the window. If you want an in-person experience, self-drive or taking a bus could be the only two choices.
