Eight Temples | Chuanxin Hall

2022-05-30

Located on the east side of the Hall of Literary Glory (Wenhuadian), in the southeast corner of the Forbidden City, the Chuanxin Hall is a group of sacrificial buildings composed of rectangular courtyards. The whole courtyard is 100m long from north to south, 25m wide from east to west, and covers an area of 2500 ㎡. The "Da Pao Jing (big well for cooking)" in the courtyard is very famous: the well water is pure and sweet, comparable to the water of the Yuquan Mountain in western Beijing. So there is a saying "The Yuquan water First, the Da Pao water Second ". The well water has not dried up so far.

From south to north, the courtyard of Chuanxin Hall is composed of three main buildings: the Livestock Farm, the Jingxing Gate, and the Chuanxin Hall, which is the place where the Qing Dynasty emperors "performed sacrifice ceremony" before Jinyan(Imperial Scripture Feast). The "Jinyan" was a lecture for the emperors to study the history and scriptures, which was generally held between February and May in the spring and August to the winter solstice in autumn. The Chuanxin Hall was built in the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, and in the middle of the hall, there are tablets of Sovereigns’ instructors Fu Xi, Shen Nong, Xuan Yuan, Emperors’ teachers Yao, and Shun, Kings’ mentors Yu, Tang, Wen, and Wu. The tablet of Chou Kung is set in the east and Confucius’ is set in the west.

Address: On the east of the Hall of Literary Glory (Wenhuadian), in the southeast corner of the Forbidden City in Beijing
