Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the memorial hall of the highest level of the party and the country, is the resting place of the great man Chairman Mao Zedong. It is also the memorial hall of the first generation of central collective leadership with Mao Zedong as the core and a national demonstration base for patriotism education.
Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is located in Tiananmen Square, covering an area of 5.72 hectares with a total construction area of 33,867㎡. On October 8, 1976, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission decided to build the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. Construction officially started on November 24, and the main building was completed on May 24, 1977. The hall was inaugurated on September 9. and opened for viewing. The main building of the memorial hall is a colonnade-shaped cube, surrounded by 44 granite pillars, with a double-eaved roof, which is majestic and has a unique Chinese style.
Along function lines, the first floor of the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall consists of the North Hall, the Memorial Hall, and the South Hall, and the second floor consists of the Revolutionary Achievement Memorial Room of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, and Chen Yun, the Movie Hall and the Collection Showroom.
The North Hall is the entrance hall and the place for holding commemorative ceremonies. In the center of the hall is a sitting statue of Chairman Mao of white marble. Behind the statue is a huge velvet embroidered tapestry "The Land of the Motherland", which means that Chairman Mao and the motherland's mountains and rivers will always be together. The Memorial Hall is at the core. Chairman Mao wears Zhongshan Suit and is covered by the party flag of the CPPCC. The black granite base of the crystal coffin is inlaid with party emblems, national emblems, and army emblems. The south hall is the exit hall. The wall in the north is covered by the poetic lines of Mao Zedong, which have been made in his calligraphic style.
The memorial rooms on the second floor fully display the great achievements and nobleness of the 6 revolutionaries of the older generation with a large number of precious photos, documents, and cultural relics according to the chronological order and topics. The Movie Hall is used for thematic presentations and screening of the documentary "The Great Achievement of the Thousand Autumns", which vividly shows the great leap of the Chinese nation from standing up, getting rich, and stronger. The Collection Showroom displays precious items presented by people all over the country, expressing the people's great affection for the Party, the Party Central Committee, and the Party's leaders.
Since its opening in 1977, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall has received nearly 240 million visitors and more than 190 foreign heads of state. Viewers from all over the world formed a "River of Missing" on Tiananmen Square.
