The Zhengyangmen Gate, together with the Watchtower, was the main gate of the inner city of Beijing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Zhengyangmen Gate is more than 20 meters high, with a doorway at the bottom and a two-story triple-eave pavilion on the top. The colossal Zhengyangmen Gate and Watchtower fully demonstrate the majesty of the imperial city in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In 1900, the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Beijing, and the tower was burned down by the army. In 1901, the Qing government rebuilt the tower, which was completed in 1906.

In 1915, the Beiyang government rebuilt the Watchtower, adding concrete guardrails, arc-shaped canopies for the windows, and some decorations. It was completed in 1916.

Below the Zhengyangmen Gate's Watchtower is the platform and the above is the watchtower. The platform is 12 meters high, with a doorway in the middle.
