Beijing Labagou Primeval Forest Park is located in the town of Ethic Man in Huairou district. As a consequence of its geographical location, spring is later than usual. In the last twenty days of April, wildflowers in the park will gradually blossom, such as apricot flowers, Iris lacteal, Pulsatilla Chinensis Regel, wild cherry flowers, pear flowers, plum flowers, hawthorn, Chinese violet cress, Sorbaria sorbifolia and rustic peach flowers and so on. They are so divine that they seem to compete to be the most glorious. The most famous one is the azaleas known as 'the Beauty of Flowers'. They are in bloom around April 20th, lasting for about a month.
When azaleas are in peak bloom in mid-April, the entire park will be decorated with colours. Walking on the roads, tourists are surrounded by the blossomed flowers, which forms fabulous scenery. Against the blue sky, clusters of azaleas flow in the breeze, like showing its beauty to welcome people.
Along the route from the main scenic spot South Monkey Mountain to the Flower-viewing Site in Ironic Tower Pavilion, you could see azaleas everywhere.
It is said that in ancient times there was a cuckoo who bereaved sang from day to night which makes it cough blood. And its blood dyed the flowers to be red and that is where azaleas’ Chinese name, cuckoo flower, comes from.
Azaleas usually blossom in spring, with 2-6 flowers per cluster. The corolla is funnel-shaped, with colours of red, light red, apricot red, white, etc., It is regarded as one of the most famous Chinese traditional flowers, and is compared to an ancient Chinese beauty called Xishi.
The glacier viewing area in the park is located in the southern part of the main scenic spot, South Monkey Mountain. In June and July, the snow and ice leftover from the previous winter can still be seen. In spring, it is dreamy to see flowers on the mountain beaming against the crystal-clear ice and snow.
