Journey to the West, a book by Wu Cheng'en (c. 1500–c. 1582), recounts the adventures of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, as he joins the monk Xuanzhuang in his travels from China to India to collect the sutras of Buddhism and bring them back to China.

Many episodes of the monkey's adventures have been made into staged versions, to the delight of audiences.
