On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, the "Edo Fantasy - Ukiyo-e Exhibition" was opened at the China Millennium Monument in Beijing as a key event of the 2022 China-Japan Cultural and Art Exchange Season.
The exhibition presents a selection of about 140 groups of classic ukiyo-e works in four chapters, presenting the unique view of the nature of the Japanese nation as well as scenes of civic life, entertainment and aesthetic fashion in the Edo period. At the exhibition, Japanese cultural elements such as cherry blossoms, kimonos and screens bring the audience an immersive experience. There are also many works familiar to Chinese visitors in the exhibition such as the famous work "Kanagawa Surf Lane" by Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai. This painting, with Mount Fuji as the center of the centripetal composition, uses a strong contrast between motion and static rendering. It is regarded as a representative painting of the Ukiyo-e, attracting many visitors to enjoy.
