Conveyor belt sushi places are always a test of self-control. Come on – is there anything more indulgent than having a continuously changing choice of raw fish roll endlessly past your lusting eyes?
If you’re struck with a craving and on a budget, Japanese franchise Genki Sushi is where you should head. You’ll see pretty much everything you’d want on parade, from salmon to seared foie gras, all atop the ubiquitous colour-coded plates. The picture menu is a field guide to the conveyor belt, and you can always ask for freshly cut fish if you fancy. The rolls are both quirky and well designed – the Boston roll especially, which is rounded out with cream cheese and salmon. Portions are small and quality is middle-of-the-road, which is exactly what you’d expect at these prices.
Bowls of other Japanese staples and finger food are also available, but perhaps best avoided. The crispy chicken wings stuffed with marinated fish roe fall flat and a bowl of white rice mixed with cucumber and salmon chunks is an exercise in blandness. Don’t bother with anything sweet either, the mochi medallions in particular will only get tossed aside after one bite.
Don’t expect pampering – you serve yourself here, down to the hot water spouts and jugs of tea at your table. A steady stream of business from CBD office workers means Genki doesn’t need to try hard to stay in the black. Nevertheless, if you simply must fill up on sushi and don’t want to break the bank, here’s your pit stop
