The Summer Palace in Beijing is decorated with red lanterns to greet the upcoming Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, or Feb. 19 this year. Lantern Festival masks the last day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, when people eat Yuanxiao or Tangyuan (round sticky dumplings with fillings), make and display lanterns. The Lantern Festival fair at the Summer Palace will run through Feb. 19.
As a great example of the art of traditional garden, the Summer Palace displays the grandeur of imperial gardens and also the beauty of nature by borrowing scenes from its surrounding landscapes, and best illustrates the principle of Chinese garden design that believes “The works of men resembles the works of heaven”.
