Houheilongmiao Village, Zhangshanying Town, Yanqing District

Houheilongmiao Village is located 10km northwest of Yanqing District, Beijing, 3km southwest of Zhangshanying Township, 0.5km northwest of Qianheilong Temple, 1.5km northeast of Xizhujiaying, and 0.8km south of Guanting Reservoir. It is the village closest to the reservoir, which has an area of 2787 mu.

Legend has it that there was a Black Old Man in Heilongmiao Village who worked in Heilongmiao wells for many years, but no one knew where he went at night or where he slept. So the villagers followed him out of curiousity and found that when he was thirsty, he could get water very simply by digging in the ground by hand. As night fell, the old man took off his boots and went down the well and never came up again. There was a year when there was flood at Foyukou village, and it seemed that Heilongmiao Village was about to be washed away. At this time, the Black Old Man took off his boots and threw them at the west mouth of the village. The water changed its direction and flowed to Xizhujiaying Village. Heilongmiao was thus saved from the flood, and there is still a field in the west of the village that looks like boots.

Houheilongmiao Village was built in the Ming Dynasty, formerly known as Heilongmiao, a village belonging to Longqing Prefecture. According to Jiajing Longqing Zhi, Heilongmiao Tunbao was built in the 16th year of Jiajing’s reign (1537). Later, it became two villages, which was renamed as it is located behind the temple. During the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Shuangyingli. Legend has it that in 1946, Houheilongmiao Village had 4 natural villages, namely Wangjiabao, Dujiabao, Lijiabao and Huaijiabao. There were about 100 households in the village. In 1954, the Guanting Reservoir was impounded. Wangjiabao and Lijiabao moved to the eighth team of Heilongmiao Village and Xiwuliying Village.

Starting from the Zhangshanying town government and all the way south, there is a straight road leading to the village. There is a domineering red village name and village sign at the entrance of the village. Flowers of various colours are on both sides of the road and houses are lined up. The boutique Dayin Yushi homestays are located here. In order to better develop the village’s economy and accelerate the upgrading of the village’s industrial structure, in the spring of 2017, the village and Beijing Dayin Yushi Hotel Management Co., Ltd. cooperated to build boutique homestays in the village. For this reason, the village established the Beijing Wolong Folklore Tourism Professional Cooperative, which was transformed into a beautiful and well-equipped boutique hotel by renting idle villagers’ farm houses, attracting a large number of tourists to experience the stay.

The traditional industries of the village are planting corn and grapes. Grapes have been planted since the 1990s and it has been nearly 30 years. The village has more than 300 mu of grape land, mainly planted with red grapes. The village applied for a low-income assistance project fund of 913,000 yuan in 2017 to improve grape varieties. Currently, there are also 10 mu of new varieties having been planted.

Walking south along the tidy path to the village’s 100-acre grape field, you can find the purple-red grapes hanging there, look very heavily. People can’t help but want to pick a bunch of them by hand and can’t wait to taste how sweet they are.

In the 1950s, a stilt team was established in Houheilongmiao Vill.age to undertake performances in the village. In the 1980s, the stilt team participated in Beijing temple fairs. Also, the village has a tradition of drum playing and Yangko, thus establishing its drumming team and the Yangko team, who often participate in various celebrations and performances organized by Zhangshanying Town.
