The heat of Beijing in early autumn has just faded away. In the Miyun District of the northeastern suburbs of Beijing, deep in the arms of the towering Yanshan Mountain, the vast reservoir is like a pearl in the mountains. The clear water is as clear as a mirror, and it is extremely cool here. Here is the Miyun Reservoir, the largest reservoir in North China and the largest source of surface drinking water in Beijing.

On September 1, this important reservoir, known as the “big water tank” of the capital, celebrated its 60th birthday. Sixty years is a cycle, when the builders’ passionate become an eternal mark, more than 500,000 residents in Miyun and a new generation of reservoir operation managers are still making unremitting efforts to protect the capital’s “water of life” and provide solid water security guarantee for the vigorous development of Beijing, the ancient capital of a thousand years. They are also diligently seeking a balance between protecting water and enriching the people.

In recent years, experts have discovered rare tree species such as maple, birch, and euonymus in water conservation forests. This means that after enclosure protection, the native tree species here have undergone natural renewal and the ecological environment has become more stable.
There are currently hundreds of thousands of migratory birds in the reservoir, including more than 100 species such as freshwater gulls, big swans, egrets, herons, cormorants, and various mergansers.
This year, Miyun Reservoir will formally implement the “Jingji Miyun Reservoir Water Source Protection Joint Action Plan”. Based on the five major water-protection methods of “upstream water conservation, forest protection, reservoir area protection, regulations and policies”, 18 measures will be comprehensively adopted to upgrade protection.
In recent years, the development of the folk tourism industry has created a leisure farm integrating leisure, sightseeing and fruit picking. Villagers are encouraged to develop folk tourism and boutique homestays. The income of the villagers has gradually increased, attracting a large number of tourists.
