
Covering a total area of 800 hectares, Hongluo Temple is 4 km away from the north of Huairou District, Beijing and 55 km away from Beijing city proper. Built in the 4th Xiankang year of the Dongjin Dynasty, Hongluo Temple exists as the origin of Northern Buddhism in China and the largest Buddhist garden, and thus dominating the Buddhist circle for over one thousand years. As the saying goes, “the Putuo Temple reigns in the Buddhist community of Southern China while the Hongluo Temple commands that of Northern China”. With historical richness and cultural greatness, as well the wonderful geographical and climate conditions, the Hongluo Mountain and the Hongluo Temple exist as the “Buddha's Pure Land” that is unique and sacred.
In front of the Great Buddha's Hall, a pair of ancient ginkgo trees grow magnificently, of which the east one is female featuring slimmer trunk and branches and the male one at the west was planted over 1,100 years ago with a height of more than 30m and a girth of over 7m.
