Longqing Gorge
Longqing Gorge featuring gorgeous scenes and fresh air is a perfect place for people to avoid scorching heat. Although it is not very big, it boasts green mountains and blue water. The scenic area as one of the top 16 new scenic spots in Beijing is located at the outfall of Gucheng River in northwest Gucheng Village 10 km northeast of Yanqing County, 85 km from Beijing downtown. Longqing Gorge that was once called Jiuqu of Beijing in ancient times is known for its beautiful landscapes paralleled with Lijiang scenes in Yunnan of southwest China. Longqingxia reservoir like a bridge is connecting two steep mountains of over hundreds of meters high – this is why it is called Longqing Gorge, spanning through 40 or 50 meters, like a huge lock to trap two dragons. Climbing on the dam to overlook the north, the dark green water reflects the mountains around and white clouds above. In summer, this area boasts cool temperature and fresh air. In winter, the long freezing days transforms this place into an ice paradise in North China, and provides advantageous conditions for carving ice lamps. Meanwhile, there are nearly 30 scenic spots along the 7 km reservoir scenic area already opened for tour. On both banks of cliffs are many strange peaks and rocks like Buddha, Shixiong Tiaoyan (stone bear jumping from a rock), Jiuliandong (nine-interconnected cave), Jiguan (rooster’s comb) Mountain, Jingang Mountain, Mati (horseshoe) Pond, Jiangjun (General) Rock and jingang Temple relics, which are called the Uniqueness outside Beijing. After the boat berths at a small pier of Jiuqu Lake, you can get on the bank and walk toward the top along the gorge, while enjoying the scenic spots like Shenxianyuan (immortal’s dwelling), Xianrenqi (chess played by immortals) and Laohuzui (tiger’s mouth) on the way.

Baihepu Reservoir

Baihepu (Baihe Fort) Reservoir got its name from the Jing’anpu Fort, also known as Baihepu in the Ming Dynasty thousands of years ago, because it defended Baihe Gorge. It is also the fifth largest reservoir of Beijing and the highest one with 560 meters high, located on the trunk steam of Baihe River, 30 km from Yanqing District, with its northwest connecting with Chicheng County of Hebei Province. The Baihe Gorge is a rare great canyon scenic spot around Beijing. In winter, the left mountains are covered by snow and ice, forming magnificent icy waterfalls, while the Baihe River is in ice blockage, like a huge white dragon coiling in the gorge, thus forming peculiar scenes. The landscapes for the 380 km self-driving tour are mainly around the reservoir, into the gorge and along the gorge. Moreover, the must-order dishes in hotels and farmhouses beside the reservoir are the ones made from fresh fish from the reservoir by stewing or deep frying. Besides those, the fresh mushroom, edible wild herds and authentic farm eggs can also cook delicious dishes that make you refreshing all day long.
