Visit These Attractions in Beijing to Commemorate May Fourth Movement

The May Fourth Movement was an anti-imperialist, cultural, and political movement which grew out of student participants in Beijing on 4 May 1919.

  • Peking University

Peking University, also called Yan Yuan (the garden of Yan), includes Shuchun Garden, Shao Garden, LangrunGarden, JingchunGarden, MingheGarden, WeixiuGarden, Changchun Garden, ChengzeGarden and others. This former well-known royal garden in the Ming and Qing dynasties has remained its basic structure and beautiful charm after hundred years of vicissitude. The Yan Yuan in spring should be the paradise on earth, with the fascinating sceneries scattering like starts.

Deep in the south of the Yan Yuan, there is a serene park with lush trees, fragrant flowers, and twittering birds. That is YannanGarden, honored as “the garden in gardens”. A walk into YannanGarden may take you travel across time and get back to Peiping. When Yan Yuan was initially constructed, teachers of Peking University used to live here, including the couples of Bingxin (Xie Wanying, litterateur), Zhu Guangqian (aesthetician), Zhou Peiyuan (dynamicist), Ma Yinchu (economist and the former President of Peking University), and Feng Youlan (philosopher), making the park home to the spirits of Peking University.

Many statues of celebrities could also be found in the campus. The public memorial ceremony and the 150th anniversary of the birthday of Cai Yuanpei, China's well-known educator, revolutionist, and ideologist, were both held in Jing Garden during this QingmingFestival when representatives of Peking University stood before the revolutionary martyr's monument and showed their grief.

  • Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei

Cai Yuanpei was a Chinese educator, Esperantist, president of Peking University, and founder of the Academia Sinica. He was known for his critical evaluation of Chinese culture and synthesis of Chinese and Western thinking, including anarchism. At Peking University, he assembled influential figures in the New Culture and May Fourth Movements.Had been leading a wandering life, Cai Yuanpei moved three times solely in Beijing. The residence that's worth mentioning is the one situated at No.75 Dongtangzi Hutong. It witnessed his successful revitalization of Peking University and his dismay when he was forced to resign as the president of Peking University. The residence also houses many details about his participation in the May 4th Movement.

Hidden in the back of the residence are two small courtyards. The principal rooms and wing rooms of the residence are linked with a corridor. This was the former residence of Cai Yuanpei and it has already been converted into an exhibition hall. Standing out from the rest of the exhibits is a half-length statue made of white marble with inscriptions on both sides. The inscriptions represent the praises made by Mao Zedong about Cai Yuanpei. It says "An Outstanding Scholar, A Role Model Worldwide".

  • Beijing Memorial Hall of New Cultural Movement

Peking University Honglou, situated at No. 29, Shatanbei Street (Wusi Street for now), Dongcheng District, Beijing, is one of the former sites of Peking University, the former Imperial University of Peking. Honglou is at the east side of Jingshan Park in the north of the Palace Museum, the north of Wusi Street, and the west of the National Art Museum of China. Of brick-wood structure and H-shaped, Honglou is 100 meters wide in the WE direction. The main building is 14 meters deep in the NS direction and the two wing buildings in the west and the east are 34.34 meters deep in NS direction. With four floors and half a basement, Honglou covers a total area of about 10,000 square meters.

The historically significant building in Beijing took its name for the the red bricks. Since its establishment in 1918, Honglou has become the origin of Chinese advanced minds and cultures. Honglou is also theheadstream of the red culture. After baptism of the New Culture Movement and the May Fourth Movement, a large number of people with lofty ideals learned about and accepted Marxism here. Honglou is also the start of the revolution. The pioneers of Communist Party as the representatives of the advanced social culture wrote down glorious history here. It has become the Beijing Culture Movement Memorial Hall today.
