Located in Miaofeng Mountain, Mentougou District, Shenquan Gorge Scenic Area is 45 kilometers away from downtown Beijing. Shenquan Gorge, literally means God's fountain in Chinese, got its name as no source of streams can be found within this 5-square-kilometer scenic spot. Famed for its marvelous mountains and miraculous water, it boasts distinct sceneries in different seasons. There are gorgeous natural sceneries and profound historical and cultural heritage, as well as abundant mountain spring resources. Among them, the wintry landscape impresses visitors most. As the temperature plunges, ice waterfalls on both sides of the mountain are congealed into splendid ice waterfalls of all sizes. Like flowers, bamboos, pillars and towers, these ice waterfalls spark dazzlingly in winter’s sunshine, picturing the most magnificent northern scenery in mountains.
Tanchang Village, the site of the Shenquan Gorge Scenic Area, was famous for making charcoal in the Ming and Qing dynasties and still keeps the best preserved charcoal kiln site in North China. The majority land of the scenic area is composed of Jurassic volcanic rocks dating back to 150 million years ago, it has a host of impressive landscapes. Some landscape, artificially produced in line with surroundings, are suitable for sightseeing and taking pictures. The valley full of spring water in the summer is now dotted with icicles while the streams are frozen into white jade belts. Along with the elaborate craftsmanship, you will be overwhelmed by sceneries wherever you go. What’s more, this scenic spot is built with local materials and the original roads have been preserved to minimize the damage to the original ecological environment.
